Background
TGEU (Transgender Europe) is a trans-led nonprofit for the rights and wellbeing of trans people in Europe and Central Asia. TGEU represents 200+ member organisations across 50 countries.
Task description
The Research Consultant will help develop and conduct TGEU-led research, contributing to the Trans Rights Index & Map, the Trans Health Map, the Trans Murder Monitoring project, and other ad hoc projects as needs and opportunities arise. The Research Consultant will also feed into the development of TGEU’s research strategic plan.
The Research Consultant will help ensure TGEU’s research projects are informed by and relevant to vulnerable trans communities, as well as widely visible and disseminated. The consultant will contribute to projects that raise awareness about the experiences of violence, discrimination, and other human rights abuses of trans people.
Because these projects are conducted in collaboration with TGEU staff, members, and organisations from around the world, the ideal candidate will bring both a strong background in social sciences research and people skills to the role.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and implement TGEU’s research work where needed.
- April-May: Support with final data verification for the 2024 Trans Rights Index & Map and with the communication of the findings for the launch campaign.
- May-Aug: Assistance with data verification and analysis for the 2024 Trans Health Map.
- Aug-Nov: Compile, verify, and analyse data for the 2024 Trans Murder Monitoring project, preparing resources for annual Trans Day of Remembrance updates, and expanding community-based hate crime monitoring.
- ad hoc: Support development of TGEU’s research department including goals, strategy, and processes.
- ad hoc: Prepare data to be easily understood by various audiences.
- ad hoc: Support the Research Officer with reporting on completed projects for funders.
We are looking for someone who
- Has knowledge of trans rights and the human rights framework in Europe;
- Has strong research skills in social sciences (both qualitative and quantitative).
- Has experience carrying out in-depth research and quickly becoming familiar with new topics;
- Has a track record of successfully managing and completing multiple projects that run concurrently;
- Is able to take responsibility for planning how and when to carry out the tasks required to complete projects, and knows when to ask for input from others;
- Has good stress management skills, support systems, or other wellbeing practices to prevent secondary trauma from hate crimes monitoring.
Additional preferred knowledge, skills, and attributes
- The ability to communicate in Spanish, Russian, or at least one of the main languages spoken in the European or Central Asian region;
- Good understanding of power dynamics and issues experienced by marginalised groups;
- Experience writing about research in English for a variety of audiences, and writing about complicated issues using accessible language or visual aids;
- Experience working in trans, LGBTQI, or other social movements.
